What inspired me to do this certain selfie was one specific portrait of Cindy Sherman’s which was called Untitled (Marilyn Monroe) 1982. In the picture Sherman can be seen mimicking Marilyn Monroe who I always found to be such an iconic person of the 90’s. This portrait of Sherman caught my attention because it feels like there is so much going on in her thoughts that she is trying to conceal. Many people seem to find her pieces to be pretty horrific but to me they seem to have a mysterious effect of finding one’s true identity towards the pieces she creates.
Pictures are a perfect way of expressing how you are feeling. For me taking pictures is something I actually enjoy doing because I like to look back to remember what kind of day it was, and kind of memories were made. This portrait also made me realize how fun it actually is to strike a pose. In this picture the position that was done was pretty uncomfortable to do and it was pretty annoying to do because I had to sit still in order to get the perfect shot. They say that “beauty is pain” and I can definitely understand that now from completing this selfie. I tried to capture the perfect lightening to make this picture come to life. I also added some filters to make it have a more retro vibe.
In this portrait Sherman seems to have the world in her hands and does not know how to control it. Many thoughts seem to be swirling in her head that she cannot seem to get straight. Sherman also expresses the beauty of Marylin Monroe in such an elegant matter. This selfie symbolizes how everything may seem so perfect, but nobody really knows how a person’s personal life is. Sherman is sitting there looking pretty when she seems to be surrounded by many dark thoughts that she cannot seem to restrain. Sherman’s mouth being open is like she wants to say something, but the words do not seem to want to come out of her mouth. To conclude, I feel so much emotions coming out of this one portrait which is a reason why I picked it.
