Ana Mendieta
Ana Mendieta was born in Cuba on 1948. She lived with her family up until the age
of 12 when she was sent to Iowa by her parents to live in a foster house. Over the
years they would move from house to house but would remain in school. When
she was in junior high, she discovered her love for art. She went on to attend the
University of Iowa achieving to get her BA and MA. After school she moved to
NY and started her life as an artist. She focused on themes of feminism, violence,
death, and belonging. When she makes art, she connects to nature, created a portrait
of herself the earth combined. “Through my earth/body sculptures, I become one
with the earth. I become an extension of nature and nature becomes an extension of
my body.” She draws on her history that she has lived. She has many portraits of her
home country of Cuba. Everything that has happened to her from when she could
remember or impacted her in any way, she draws about. She has used her naked
body to show the spiritual and physical attachment to the earth. One of her most
famous times was during her Silueta Series. In this she would create female
silhouettes in nature - in mud, sand, and grass - with natural materials ranging from
leaves and twigs to blood, and making body prints or painting her silhouette onto
a wall. She would use her hands to draw on the walls with blood in her hands. This
just showed the woman that she was. The nature side of her took over her whole life
and created this amazing artist. She was very successful in her artistic career but it
ended to quick. She died at a young age. There was speculation that her husband had
pushed her out the 34th floor window, but after a few years of investigation, he was
found as not guilty for Ana Mendieta’s death.
Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol was born in 1928 and lived in Pittsburgh. He was diagnosed with chorea
at a young age which he says had a huge part in his personality. He attended school and
college just like any other student does. At first he wanted to study art and become an
art professor but later decide to change it and study commercial art. His career was
successful in this and became known and more popular as people started to realize that
he had a great talent. He submitted his work to several galleries which is how many people
started to realize who he was. He began to receive recognition as an influential and
controversial artist. He started the pop art era and very quickly became famous. He
became a director, producer and was a leading figure in the visual art movement. His
work explored the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture, and
advertising. He made sculptures, paintings, silk screenings, and more. The celebrity
name that he created for himself became a part of him. There were films that were
made about him, and books that were written about him. He created a new form of
art that everyone loved. He made iconic paintings of already famous people such as
Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Muhammad Ali, and more. Campbell’s soup cans was
one that did appear in plenty of his portraits.  He became a sensation to these people
and became a public figure with his art.
One man’s upbringing is another downfall which is what happened to Valerie Solanas.
Solanas was an author and one day she had given Warhol a script and when she asked
for it in return, she wasn't given it. Later that same day, she shot Warhol in his studio.
He barely survived leaving him scarred for life. He suffered from physical effects for
the rest of his life and his artwork was very much affected and never kept up with his
usual standards. In the 1980s he did had a bit if a re-emergence but then was only
criticized for being  a business artist. Just a few years later he died from gallbladder
surgery. Warhol, during his time, was the most inspirational and popular artist that there
has been. He worked with celebrities, advertising, and young talents as well. He went
from being a commercial illustrator to being the most successful artist. He lived a great
life with celebrities and was successful with money. It was a shame that he didn't get
to continue his dream for longer than he did.
Jean - Michel Basquiat
Basquiat had a very troubled childhood. He was half Haitian and half Puerto
Rican. Right from the start, his parents got him into art. They would take him
to art museums in Manhattan and also even enrolled him as a member in museums.
He continued to go to school but at a very young age he ended up dropping out.
His father wasn't too happy about that so he licked him out of the house. Basquiat
was homeless at the age of 17. He lived off selling t-shirts.
Basquiat would draw graffiti on walls of buildings which is how he ended up
making some friends and even got a job. He met a lot of different people during
his poor stage. He met a girl and she opened her doors for him. She wanted him
to get a job but that didn't work out for him. It wasn't something he was used to
or even liked. He was all about art and if it wasn't about that then he wasn't
comfortable. As time passed he started making his paintings and started to sell
them. It was a great success. He was doing what he was good at and what he
enjoyed. With time he became more famous with his paintings. One day he
met Andy Warhol and they became very good friends. He ended up moving
out of NY and moving to California to produce his artwork. His work made
a breakthrough in the 1980s where critics looked at his work. He became more
and more popular also with the help of Andy Warhol. The fame wasn't good for
him though. He got back into drugs and that made him lose his focus. The
drugs killed his careers very quickly. He died at a very young age of 28 by a
heroin overdose in his art studio. He didn't get to live up to the potential that
he created for himself. His poor life was what encouraged him to be the success
that he wanted but once he had that success, he felt like he had nothing else to
gain or lose. In his mind he was at the top and just fooled around with his own life.
