The Secret Garden was a novel written by Frances Hodgson Burnett, It was published in 1911. This book was one I read as a young kid, around the age of like 10 to 11. Although the book has darker themes that may be 'too much' for a child, I still found it to be very exciting. The book followed a young girl, who after terrible circumstances involving an outbreak that takes her parents, she is moved around from house to house very bitter. She finds her final place in England, where she lives with a very wealthy family. The little girl, Mary, is bitter and spoiled and hates everything about her circumstances, she hates the maids and the house and everyone living there. She eventually takes a liking to one of the maids, who introduces her to the gardens where the late lady of the house spent most of her time. After a series of events, she finds the gardens and eventually, under lock and key, find the secret entrance to the rest of the garden. one night, she meets the weak and crippled son of the house, Colin. Mary then takes him to the secret part of the garden. Father comes back from a trip to his 'sick' sons health improved and playing in the garden with Mary, he is rejoiced and welcomed by the thoughts and memory of his late wife.
The selfie I took, Although does not involve me, involves an old doll of mine, a locket, plant, and lacy fabric, as the main focus, I wanted to represent a soft whimsical land. Putting the locket and doll apron on a small pot was meant to represent growth. I wanted to include plants the best way I could, not only because the book involves a garden, but also because Wangechi Mutu included a lot of flowers and plants in her work, and I related to that more than anything.
