Selfie Inspired by Wangechi Mutu

This selfie is based on the novel 1984 which is based on a totalitarian government in Oceania, where the Party scrutinizes human actions with ever watchful Big Brother. Like Winston Smith from 1984, the character in the selfie is in a world where we are constantly being watched through many surveillance cameras. The character seeks to prevent those who are watching us by shutting down the cameras. The idea of being watched makes the character feel terrible because the cameras prevent others from doing things they want to do. The spectacle plays a huge role in this selfie because there are cameras watching the character's every move and an eye that symbolizes a dictator that the character must obey or else there will be consequences. According to Debord, "the spectacle can be found on every screen that you look at." This means that those who look at the camera are already part of the spectacle.
